Zero Waste Dogs
What Does It Mean to be "Zero Waste?"
So many parts of pet ownership simply cannot be measured – how much you love your pet, how cute they are, or how much joy they bring to the lives of everyone they meet. But, when it comes to pet ownership, there is one very important and measurable number to keep in mind: zero. As you research bringing your pet into your life, it is likely that you will come across the term “zero waste” and are curious about it. So, what does it mean to be zero waste, and what can you do to ensure you are achieving this important metric for yourself, your pet, and the environment?
Zero waste can be described in one word: consumption. We all know that with each additional family member we bring into our home, that individual–whether human or animal–creates the need for additional stuff. From food to its packaging, waste, toiletries, toys and more, our new housemates add to our lives and our surroundings in the form of stuff. The concept of zero waste asks us to be cognizant of these additions and the need to make responsible choices as a result. After all, we can make a difference when it comes to how much we’re contributing to landfills as a result of being pet owners.
Why Does Zero Waste Matter?
Before you brush off the concept of zero waste because “it’s just a pet,” think twice. Sure, in some cases your furry friend might weigh less than you or even fit into a shoulder bag, but that doesn’t mean that their impact on the environment is also small. In fact, the impact of pets on the environment is getting larger and larger every day.
Consider the past few years alone; the pandemic forced more people than ever to stay inside and work remotely when possible. Being at home opened people’s hearts (and doors) to pet ownership like never before. In fact, one survey showed that 78% of pet owners acquired their pet during the pandemic! That’s no frivolous factoid.
One other important factor to keep in mind is that our furry friends are often carnivores. In our human lives, we know that being meat eaters has an impact on the environment (specifically, CO2 emissions), so your dog’s dietary choices will as well. Their love of meat requires energy, gas, and land, so each pup definitely has its own carbon pawprint already! Did you know, for example, that the meat pets consume each year is the equivalent of 13.6 million cars on the road? Woof!
How To Be A Zero Waste Pet Owner
Numbers like that would make anyone want to spring into action. Thankfully, there is good news: By making some smart choices, you can achieve the status of zero waste for your pet. Let’s jump into a few areas you can tackle now to make a difference.
Diet: As we mentioned, a pet’s meat-eating habits play a big part in making an impact on the environment. But, just as people who want to consider changing their diet should first discuss those options with their doctors, if you would like to change something about your dog’s diet, please first do so with your veterinarian. Did you know, for example, that dogs are omnivores? So, contrary to what you might think, they don’t have to have meat at every meal. Your vet can point you to the options that are nutritiously appropriate for your dog. There are other protein sources available, including interesting options like insect-based foods, that are becoming more available. Also remember to feed your dog the responsible amount of food (that includes table scraps as well!) to keep them healthy, which will limit your trips to the vet.
Waste: We’ve all seen those plastic waste bags at the dog park. Maybe you’ve even grabbed an extra or two for the week ahead. Whether it’s waste bags or toys, accessories, bowls, and more, considering the production of these plastic items and if they can be recycled is something you should be taking into consideration. Another important note is that the topic of waste doesn’t just have to do with bags. Always pick up after your pet, no matter where you are. Waste, when left unattended, releases harmful microorganisms that can linger for years – which presents a health hazard for humans.
Toys: We love to watch our dogs roll around on the floor with a new toy or treat every now and again. But, just like children can have too many toys at home, dogs can, too! Pay attention to what your dog truly needs versus the human desire to shop, which creates over consumerism and at the end of the day, waste in a landfill.
Even though the environment can’t actually talk, we know Mother Nature would be proud of you for implementing these eco-friendly solutions.
